The Dorsey Brothers Albums

The Dorsey Brothers consisted of a studio group fronted by musicians Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. They started recording under their name in 1928 with a series of studio recordings for the OKeh label (they had come to New York in the mid-1920s and were among the most sought-after musicians). Always just a studio group, members (during the 1928-1934 period) included nearly all of the great white jazz musicians playing around New York City:

  • Carl Kress (guitar)
  • Chauney Morehouse (drums)
  • Adrian Rollini (bass sax)
  • Joe Tarto (brass bass)
  • Manny Klein (trumpet)
  • Arthur Schutt (piano)
  • Jack Teagarden (trombone)
  • Frank Teschmacher (clarinet, tenor sax)
  • Frank Signorelli (piano)
  • Stan King (drums)
  • Phil Napoleon (trumpet)
  • Eddie Lang (guitar)
  • Bing Crosby (vocal)
  • Glenn Miller (trombone)
  • Leon Mcconville (trumpet)
  • Bunny Berigan (trumpet)
  • Artie Bernstein (slap bass)
  • Joe Venuti (violin)
  • Fulton McGrath (piano)
  • Dick McDonough (guitar)
  • Mildred Bailey (vocals)
  • Johnny Mercer (vocals)

As a studio recording group, they recorded for;

  • OKeh 1928-1930
  • Melotone 1931
  • Columbia 1931
  • Brunswick 1932-1934

They also did a few sides for the dime store labels (Banner, Cameo, Domino, Jewel, Oriole, Perfect, etc.) and also a handful of sides during their Brunswick period were issued on Vocalion.

They signed to Decca Records in 1934, basically formed a more traditional regular band, and even started performing live until they had their famous falling out in September, 1935. Glenn Miller composed two songs for the Dorsey Brothers Band when he was a member in 1934 and 1935, “Annie’s Cousin Fanny” and “Dese Dem Dose”.

In 1935, the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra had two no.1 recordings on Decca Records, “Lullaby of Broadway” with Bob Crosby on vocals, no.1 for two weeks, and “Chasing Shadows”, no.1 for three weeks. Tommy Dorsey would have seventeen number one hits while Jimmy Dorsey would have ten after they formed their own orchestras in 1935.

In 1996, the U.S. Postal Service issued a commemorative Jimmy Dorsey and Tommy Dorsey postage stamp.

Jazz music: Steve Reich

April 14th, 2009

Stephen Michael Reich (born October 3, 1936) is an American composer who pioneered the style of minimalist music. His innovations include using tape loops to create phasing patterns (examples are his early compositions, It’s Gonna Rain and Come Out), and the use of simple, audible processes to explore musical concepts (for instance, Pendulum Music and Four Organs). These compositions, marked by their use of repetitive figures, slow harmonic rhythm and canons, have significantly influenced contemporary music, especially in the US. Reich’s work took on a darker character in the 1980s with the introduction of historical themes as well as themes from his Jewish heritage. Different Trains (1988) has been called “the only adequate musical response—one of the few adequate artistic responses in any medium—to the Holocaust”, and was credited with earning Reich a place among the great composers of the 20th century.

Reich’s style of composition has influenced many other composers and musical groups. Reich has been described by The Guardian as one of “a handful of living composers who can legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical history”, and the Village Voice’s Kyle Gann has said Reich “may [...] be considered, by general acclamation, America’s greatest living composer.” On January 25, 2007, Reich was named the 2007 recipient of the Polar Music Prize, together with Sonny Rollins.

Steely Dan mp3s

Steely Dan is an American jazz-classic rock band centered on core members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. The band reached a peak of popularity in the late 1970s, with the release of seven albums blending elements of jazz, rock, funk, R&B, and pop. Rolling Stone magazine has called them “the perfect musical antiheroes for the Seventies.”

The band’s music is characterized by complex jazz-influenced structures and harmonies played by Becker and Fagen along with a revolving cast of rock and pop studio musicians. Steely Dan’s “cerebral,” “wry” and “eccentric” lyrics are filled with sharp sarcasm which often touches upon such “dark” themes as drugs, crime, and their true-to-life “contempt of west coast hippies.” The pair are well-known for their near-obsessive perfectionism in the recording studio, with one notable example being that Becker and Fagen used at least 42 different studio musicians, 11 engineers, and took over a year to record the tracks that resulted in 1980′s Gaucho — an album that contains only seven songs.

Steely Dan toured from 1972 to 1974, but in 1975 became a purely studio-based act. The late 1970s saw the group release a series of extremely successful singles and albums. They disbanded in 1981, and throughout most of the next decade, the duo remained largely inactive in the music world. During this time, the group steadily built and maintained “a cult following.” In 1993, the group resumed playing live concerts; the early 21st century saw Steely Dan release two albums of new material, the first of which earned a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. They have sold more than 30 million albums worldwide.

Ryo Kawasaki

Ryo Kawasaki (е·ќеґЋз‡Ћ, Kawasaki Ryo) (born February 25, 1947) chose a career as a jazz fusion guitarist after spending some years studying as a scientist. During the 60s he played with various Japanese jazz groups and also formed his own bands. In the early 70s he came to New York where he settled and found steady work in very distinguished company, including the bands of Gil Evans, Elvin Jones, Chico Hamilton, Ted Curson and Joanne Brackeen. In the mid-80s, Kawasaki drifted out of performing music in favour of writing music software programmes for computers. He also produced several techno dance singles, forming his own company, Satellites Records, for their release.

In 1991 he returned to jazz and proved to be as skilled and adept as ever on albums recorded for a Japanese label but marketed in the United States by his own company. Thanks to his long and wide experience, Kawasaki is able to switch with apparent ease between hard bop and jazz-rock. His playing is notable for its fluency and a sometimes hard-hitting style.

Paul Plimley

Paul (Horace) Plimley (b. Vancouver, 16 March 1953) is a free jazz pianist and vibraphonist. He is one of the doyens of the Canadian jazz avant-garde, a co-founder of the New Orchestra Workshop Society and frequent collaborator with the bassist Lisle Ellis. He is well versed in classical music and in all styles of jazz; he was one of the first and most convincing interpreters of Ornette Coleman’s music on the piano (an instrument usually seen as antithetical to Coleman’s music).

Plimley studied classical piano under Kum-Sing Lee at the University of British Columbia (1971-1973). In 1978-1979 he studied with Karl Berger and Cecil Taylor at the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, NY. In 1977 he founded the New Orchestra Workshop, and he has been active in many of the ensembles associated with NOW, including the NOW Orchestra.

His work with Lisle Ellis is extensive, and includes the duo CD Both Sides of the Same Mirror (Nine Winds, 1989); When Silence Pulls, with Andrew Cyrille (Music & Arts, 1990); Noir, with Bruce Freedman and Gregg Bendian (Victo, 1992); Density of the Lovestruck Demons with Donald Robinson (Music & Arts, 1994); and Safecrackers with Scott Amendola (Victo, 1999). Most notable, perhaps, are two recordings for Hat Art: the collection of Ornette Coleman interpretations, Kaleidoscopes (1992), and (under Joe McPhee’s leadership), a revisiting of Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite called Sweet Freedom, Now What? (1994).
